LOVED this book. Loved the characters. Didn't want this book to end. I hope there is a sequel!!

This story is told from alternating perspectives: Sarah, a daughter of a wealthy family from South Carolina, and Hetty "Handful," a slave on Sarah's family's plantation. When Sarah turned age 11, she was given a slave for her birthday: Hetty. Even from the age of 11, Sarah was wise beyond her years; she didn't want to own another human being and tried to set Hetty free. Sarah made a promise to Hetty's mom that she would find a way for Hetty to gain her freedom. The rest of the novel follows the hard lives of both Sarah and Hetty as they each grow older & find their wings. Each wants equality and freedom. And in the end, while I might not describe them as friends, they develop a loving respect for each other that makes the story touching and inspiring.
