Surfacing

Taken off the Bowls Club bookshelf to read - I have always enjoyed Margaret Atwood's writing. This is also on the 1001 list.
Not sure what to think of this book! Very strange story about a young woman whom we never seem to learn her name and who returns to her childhood home in search of her missing father. She takes her lover and some friends with her and we see the dynamics between all four break down as they experience the Canadian back country island wilderness and their young friend finally dealing with the death of both her parents and the abortion which was forced upon her by a past married boyfriend. Much antagonism towards the Americans they run run into on the island and after what could be seen as a complete breakdown and hallucinations, our young lady seems to come through the other side and reenter normal life again.
Certainly kept me reading on!

Winner of the 2000 Booker Prize.
Hmmm. Taken from Templestowe meet-up today on recommendation.
Placing this is my 'TBR' pile as the blurb seems a bit off-putting.
From back of book:
"A young woman returns to Northern Quebec to the remote island of her childhood, with her lover and her two friends, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of her father. Flooded with memories, she begins to realise that going home means entering not only another place but another time. As the wild island exerts its elemental hold and she is submerged in the language of the wilderness, she sees that what she is really looking for is her own past."
Listed as #354 on the *1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die* list and available for friends of the 1001-library.
FYI: Surfacing - IMDb.
Directed by Claude Jutra starring Joseph Bottoms, Kathleen Beller, R.H. Thomson and Margaret Dragu.
A young girl and her friends set off on an expedition into the wilderness in order to find her missing father.

Sorry, I simply didn't like this. Read as far as page 102 (chapter thirteen) and closed it in annoyance.
Kept thinking of the fact that it was made into a movie, and wondered how that dealt with the internal dialogue.
Book handed out at today's meet-up in Templestowe.
Happy reading, Bon Voyage, book ! Greetings, you-know-who.
