"Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge."
'More than fifty years on, Iris Chase is remembering Laura's mysterious death. And so begins an extraordinary and compelling story of two sisters and their secrets. Set against a panoramic backdrop of twentieth-century history, The Blind Assassin is an epic tale of memory, intrigue and betrayal.
I read this a while ago, and am planning to mail it to another Bookcroosser to share it. It's a very intelligent book, imaginatively written with memories, narrative, newspaper articles and letters. Interspersed within is a novel within a novel, Laura's only book and known within this history as a cult novel. It's a fascinating read....some of Laura's novel is a bit slow....but Margaret Atwood fully deserved the Booker Prize for this book. She shows her talent, character depth and interest in history throughout.
I am sending this book to Hecate. Enjoy!

Received safely from Robbiesmum - thank you! I've only read one of her books so I'm looking forward to this.
I loved this book - the story was compelling, and it's so intelligently written. I liked the way she used newspaper articles and suchlike, and especially the way the articles would give news of an event which hadn't yet happened in the main narrative, so it played around with your expectations of the story. And somehow it was epic and yet rooted in the everyday at the same time. It also made me think that I should read more Canadian authors.
Got this today in trade, thank you!

Oops, I appear to have picked up another book.
Actually, I've wanted to read this one for years.

The story within a story within a story doesn't make it hard to follow at all, but does make it hard to explain when trying to tell your husband about excerpts!
I still want to know what really happened the sacrificial virgin and the blind assassin, even if that story wasn't "real".
