The Madonnas of Leningrad: A Novel

Because of this book, I got butterflies in my tummy the first time I saw the Hermitage and became so emotional upon walking into the palace and seeing the grand staircase that I actually cried. Unfortunately, the first time I saw that grand staircase I was envisioning it as Ms. Dean had described it, being covered in ice. Rather, when I saw it it was encased in scaffolding in order to be repaired. Yet, when I looked at that staircase, all I could see was ice, and the Babushka who had clambered up and down that staircase, attempting to save the art.
I grew up in Chicago, visiting The Art Institute at least twice a year and have visited Le Louvre & the Met many times but I had only heard "vaguely" about The Hermitage, so The Madonnas was a revelation, regarding the Hermitage.
