One Summer: America, 1927

Another fascinating book from Bill Bryson. He takes the summer of 1927 and relays all the strange and wonderful things that went on, some of which we learned about in history classes, but anything we learned in history class will be diminished greatly when we get Bryson's version. He is the best at filling his readers with a sense of amazement. Add that to his talent for researching the little gems of details that other authors leave out, and you've got a page turner. How he does that time and again is what makes his fans impatiently await his next effort. Little paragraphs like this are the ingredients that make historical figures come to life:
"He (Babe Ruth) was equally hopeless at learning lines. Once for a national radio broadcast he was coached again and again to say: "As the Duke of Wellington once said, the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton." When it came time to recite the line, Ruth proudly blurted:"As Duke Ellington once said, the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Elkton."
