I really enjoyed this book. It tells the story of Ruth, a slow simple minded girl, growing up in Honey Creek, Illinois. Ruth, like all of us, has many lessons to learn about life. Unfortunately, she pays with all she has to earn this knowledge. She questions the validity of Christianity throughout the book, all the while learning the hard way what hate and meanness do to a persons soul. This is what I feel the author has done best in this book. She shows us the content of the characters souls. She goes beyond character development, and on into their spiritual development. I can't wait to read more books by Jane Hamilton.

I loved this book when I read it. Ive already RABCKed my original copy, I got this one to give to another BCer.

Received as RBACK from salinger007 (Thanks!). I was off-line for several weeks and wasn't able to make an entry when I first received it, but better late than never.

I thought the narrator's voice in this book was really well developed, and Ruth shows a lot of depth of feeling and sometimes unexpected insight while still remaining a complex an individualized character...there's no feeling of the "man behind the curtain" from the author. It was absolutely exhausting to read, and not exactly a feel-good book (rather depressing actually), but very well-written.

Not something I'd want to read again, but I'm glad I read it once.

Mailed out today as part of a trade.

book arrived last week and am just now getting it journaled. sorry for the delay.

Have read up through Chapter 4 now. This is going to be a "heavy" book but it has me captivated and I want to find out what happens to the main character Ruth as her story has drawn me in so far.
