The Summer without Men

I've read a couple of other Siri Hustvedt books and I was very interested to read one where she writes as a female narrator Mia rather than as a male, as she does in her most famous novel What I Loved. I didn't enjoy this quite as much as her others but it is a quirky mix of various women's stories - the teenage girls in Mia's poetry class; the abused young wife next door; Mia herself abandoned by her husband of 30 years; the surprising elderly ladies in her mother's care home. It has little line drawings amongst the text, of a woman gradually flying free of a box. Do we want her to take back her husband, after it doesn't work out with his young French fling? Quite an intriguing little book, nicely slim compared to Hustvedt's others!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Sent to slipperbunny in Finland as a wish fulfilment! Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for the book. =) I have read one other book from Hustvedt in Finnish and I liked it a lot. I love this cover!
This was quite different from The Enchantment of Lily Dahl, which was a mystery novel. I still find it interesting how Hustvedt writes interactions between characters and how all the characters clearly are different from each other. Interesting book but not quite what I expected.

I took the book with me from our meetup. Hustvedt is an author I've been interested in, so looking forward to this one!
I read this book a while ago, but for some reason never got around journaling it. I quite enjoyed it, the athomosphere and the characters were interesting. I hadn't read Hustvedt's books before this.
