From Book cover:

An Epic of Awesome Power

Kahlan has at last gained the one goal she had always thought was beyond her grasp ... love. Against all odds, the ancient bonds of secret oaths, and the dark talents of men long dead, Richard has won her heart.

Amid sudden and disastrous events, Richard's life is called due to satisfy those treacherous oaths. To save his life, Kahlan must forsake Richard's love and cast him into the chains of slavery, knowing there could be no sin worse than such a betrayal.

Richard is determined to unlock the secrets bound in the magic of ancient oaths and to again be free. Kahlan, alone with the terrible truth of what she has done, must set about altering the course of a world thrown into war. But even that may be easier than ever winning back the heart of the only man she will ever love.

I was surprised when I saw a box definitely bigger than one book in the mailbox, and even more surprised to open it and find FOUR books! Thank you for your generosity! Bookcrossers are always impressing me with their unexpected kindness.

Richard's power is developing. To prevent this untapped magic from slowly poisoning him, he must learn to use it, but all he wants is to go home with the woman he loves. Instead, he is being tailed by The Sisters of Light, who are offering to teach him, but have their own political game in which he is just a pawn. Kahlan must try to put aside her own feelings and make decisions that will affect their world, even if they break her heart.

By the end of this book I was feeling very frustrated by the author's attempts to regulate magic through strict gender roles. Trying to claim that a certain magic only works for woman because they are "nurturing" when the most caring, child-loving character in the series is a male, and similar clunky gender stereotypes as a basis for the magic system were leaving a bad taste in my mouth. This style of fantasy is usually pretty sexist, but the author's treatment of the female characters here is starting to wear thin. The same issues I had with the first one (angsty characters I just don't care about lurching along in a dull plot) continued here.

This feels like a very generic fantasy series, best read with one's brain firmly turned off.
