A great book in which Andrew Pham tells his father's life story. The narrative alternates between two time lines, one set in the North 1940-54, the other one set in the South 1956-76 - I found this a bit confusing at times, but then got used to the rhythm and saw certain parallels. It's the life of a wealthy landowner's son who becomes a refugee, delves into his studies, becomes a teacher, but is then drafted into the army and finally lands in a reeducation camp. Pham Van Thong experiences wars, colonial occupation, invasion, famine, migration... There are great descriptions of the Vietnamese countryside and of Saigon and Hanoi. A good read - especially if you're interested in Vietnamese history of the 20th century.

Unfortunately I had to give up this book about half-way... there were lots of interesting bits in it, but all those war/battle stories just aren't my thing so reading it kind of wore me out.

Tarna is still interested in this, so the book will travel to her at some point.

This book has started it's journey from Florida (US) and travelled through Germany to Finland and now it arrived to Arctic Circle in Finland.
I'm not sure if this is my kind of a book but I think I'll give it a chance.
I wish I was in Florida right now, because today it is - 22 C ( =7,6 F) here in Rovaniemi.
