This is a touching and beautifully written, yet simple novel written from the perspective of a Silverback Gorilla named Ivan who is living in captivity. It definitely is a statement about the state of many captive animals and the cruelty and hardship they endure whether it is out of ignorance or intentional. I absolutely loved it and Katherine Applegate captures the "humanity" of our animal friends beautifully.
It should also be noted that this novel won the Newberry Award for 2013 - well deserved!
Book Description:
Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.
Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he''s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.
Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home-and his own art-through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it''s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.
Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan''s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope.

Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing January meet-up. When I realized this was written by K.A. Applegate, of Animorphs fame, I knew I had to snatch up this book.
I can see why this won the Newberry. Such a wonderful and touching story. Everyone in the group needs to read this.
Passing this book on to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing February meet-up.

Picked up at September Calgary BookCrossing meetup.
I haven't read a children's book since ... well, when I was a child.
This was a pleasant surprise. Touching, sad, and happy. I would recommend this to all animal lovers.

Passing this to Crataegus before the next BookCrossing meetup comes up.
BookyMcBooks made me read this in exchange, and I don't remember why. I thought this book was rather sad for a kids book.
Will be brought to tomorrow's Calgary bookcrossing meetup and handed off.
