Although I found Labyrinth derivative, so didn't bother with Sepulchre, the second of her Languedoc trilogy, a friend whose reading tastes I often share recommended this unrelated novel to me when we met recently. Trusting her judgement, I bought this copy, which doesn't look as though it's ever been read, in the St Michael's Hospice charity shop in Ripon this morning, prepared to give it a go - and at least it has the advantage of being shorter than Labyrinth!

Amazon Editorial Review: "The Great War took much more than lives. It robbed a generation of friends, lovers and futures. In Freddie Watson's case, it took his beloved brother and, at times, his peace of mind. Unable to cope with his grief, Freddie has spent much of the time since in a sanatorium. In the winter of 1928, still seeking resolution, Freddie is travelling through the French Pyrenees - another region that has seen too much bloodshed over the years. During a snowstorm, his car spins off the mountain road. Shaken, he stumbles into the woods, emerging by a tiny village. There he meets Fabrissa, a beautiful local woman, also mourning a lost generation. Over the course of one night, Fabrissa and Freddie share their stories of remembrance and loss. By the time dawn breaks, he will have stumbled across a tragic mystery that goes back through the centuries. By turns thrilling, poignant and haunting, this is a story of two lives touched by war and transformed by courage."

I loved this unforgettable story of love, loss and ghosts, with 1329 visiting 1928.
The delightful photographs anchor it in reality!

La Tombe de Pyrene
The short story printed at the back of the book is a fascinating snapshot into the more recent past, 1891, visiting caves in the same area.

Given to me by Nu-knees on a visit to N Yorksire and a mini-meet, huge lavender scone and pleasant tour of the town. Thanks very much for your company and intro to Knaresborough.

This seemed a less daunting read than Kate Mosse's Labyrinth which is still sitting waiting for me to take it off my shelf and read it. An interesting history of the persecuted Cathars in 14th century Pyrenees with a bit of ghostly time travel which I found a little odd and contrived. However, a pleasant, light and interesting read.
