Captain Hollister has been a prisoner for four years. Four years ago, the soldiers under his command were slaughtered by monstrous creatures and they also attacked him. No one believed him. But now, it has happened again and the famed Allan Pinkerton comes to free him. Hollister is the only man known to have encountered these creatures and survived, so they want him to help train a group of fighters.
This was a pretty entertaining adventure story. The steampunk/vampire mix seems to be popular, and when it produces nice romps like this, I don't mind! The characters were interesting and the worldbuilding was solid. The weak spot for me was the writing. It wasn't bad, but it felt amateur. There were too many cliches and predictable phases, and things that you see in "how to write" books that should be used in moderation (ex. giving your character a catchphrase to make their voice "distinctive".)

This book is heading out in The Vampire Bookbox
Oh goody, a new author to try! Thanks for adding this to your box.
I enjoyed this book as it was set in the West and had lots of action. The good guys were very likable and the story line was interesting. It definitely ends promising a sequel, but so far I haven't been able to find one.
Sending out to someone who won it in a swap at BookObsessed.
