Had this one for several years and thought it was registered. Turns out it wasn't...better late than never.

This one seems like a bit of a gothic horror story. It is very moody and there is a story within the story. Margaret has been asked to write the biography of Vida Winter, a much-beloved novelist. Miss Winter is dying and she has one last story to tell - hers - the missing 13th tale from her collection. There is much here that harkens back to other stories - Jane Eyre, The Woman in White, and The Turn of the Screw, foremost among them.

Quotes to remember:

Everybody has a story. It's like families. You might not know who they are, might have lost them, but they exist all the same. You might drift apart or you might turn your back on them, but you can't say you haven't got them. Same goes for stories.

We all have our sorrows, and although the exact delineaments, weight, and dimensions of grief are different for everyone, the color of grief is common to us all.
