Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable.

Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband Luke; when she played with and protected her daugher; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now...everything has changed.

Oh my goodness - I can't believe it's been 2 1/2 years since I received this book! I have finally read it though and it will be passed on soon.

I quite enjoyed reading this book, but I have to admit I didn't like the ending. It left it all too up in the air for me. The book was a lot easier to read that I expected also.

Well, I have finally got around to journalling this book although I read it a while back. Atwood is one of my favourite authors, and this didn't disappoint. I am a huge fan of dystopian fiction, and books written in the first person, and slightly ambiguous endings so this ticks all the boxes for me.

Going off to be part of the 1001 Books Library.
