When my friend was clearing out an old storeroom at her workplace, she found a huge number of books tucked away out of sight. Rather than see them thrown out, I kindly offered to adopt them all for BookCrossing.

WAITING FOR ANYA
Despite loving 'War Horse' as a child, I've never read any other books by this author - as this had a cute dog on the cover, I couldn't resist having a look. What a surprise? I really enjoyed it, although the hunt and death of the bear at the beginning nearly made me put it back down again. A perfect story to introduce children to the themes centered around WWII, without dwelling on the gorier details.

WAR HORSE
I have genuinely no idea how many times I read this as a child, but returning to it all these years later, I was pleasantly surprised to realise how much I had forgotten. Yes, it's a sanitized version of the 1st World War and yes, it has a nice, happy, neat ending, but I honestly don't think any of that matters. It's a great story to introduce children to the idea of animal welfare and animal feelings, and it is peppered by great characters that aren't over mawkish. They face the realities of war along with the reader. One to make you cry and smile throughout.
