When Saddam Hussein was captured this week, he had one book with him, Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment. Was this a secret message to his followers or was the Butcher of Baghdad actually interested in reading the story of Roskalnikov, the poor tormented student who is driven by poverty and desperation to kill? Roskalnikov commits the perfect crime and goes scott-free only to be tormented and punished for his crime by his feelings of guilt. Does this story mean something to Saddam? And if it does, what does it tell us about him?
I hope to read this classic 19th century Russian novel and think about Saddam as I do.
