ETA 8/18/13:
My thoughts about this book when I read it in 2011...
I’m probably one of the very few people who didn’t fall in love with this book. The story is of a Trond, 67-year-old Norwegian man who moves to a very secluded area of Norway to live out the rest of his life. Oddly enough in this remote setting, he encounters Lars, another man whom he knew from his youth. This meeting set Trond into remembering the context in which he had known the Lars’s family when both were young. More than all else, Trond’s memories dwelt on his relationship with his father and events that led to the last time he saw his father.
This is a slow-moving lyrical story that presents the natural settings very beautifully. It was the lack of action and the seamless melding of past and present, though, that had me dismayed. There were times when I wasn’t even sure of the time period I was reading until a character either from the past or present appeared. For those who love slow-paced and quiet novels, this would be the perfect book. However, it wasn’t quite the best fit for me.

This was left over at the end of meet-up and Squeaky said that since she brought it, she would not take it home. I am going to Pittsburgh next weekend and will likely deposit this in one of the Little Free Libraries I plan to visit there.
