Journal Entry 1 by BookFrog from Albion Park, New South Wales Australia on Monday, December 15, 2003
I saw the film many years ago in New Zealand... right down the very bottom. A very interesting story, very... difficult story to know those things went on..

From Booklist
A book with a punch equal to its publicity hype! Journalist Carcaterra tells with gripping force of his days growing up in the tough New York City neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen in the 1960s (the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty). He and his three closest buddies engaged in petty crime until the day their tricks got out of hand and escalated into a major offense, for which they were sent to a juvenile home in upstate New York. They were tormented during their months there, not by other young inmates but by their adult guards, who brutalized them relentlessly in a program of horror and torture that included rape. Once out, once grown up, one of the boys became a lawyer, and through a bizarre twist of events worthy of being turned into a movie (in fact, the movie rights have been sold, with Barry Levinson lined up as director), he, Carcaterra, and the other two friends expose the horrible wrongs they suffered in that detention home. Both difficult to read and difficult to put down, this book will garner lots of attention, and as a result, readership demand will be high.

Journal Entry 2 by BookFrog at Queen Victoria Building (QVB) in Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Wednesday, December 17, 2003
Released on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at Queen Victoria Building in Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia.

Not really anything to do with the theme of the centenary of flight but thought I might find a bed to release it on in the city... and I did.

In the underground part that links Grace Bros to the Queen Victoria Building there is a Bay Swiss/Gowings store. Right in the entrance way is a daybed piled high with cushions.

Shoved down behind the cushions (the store side) is the book.

Another sprint to the other end of town before the store closed...ratting through white pillows like a mad person pretending I was seriously interested in the day bed as opposed to the book hidden in it! Such a grin - couldn't hide it - when I found the book - with ooooo the genuine article sticky note. One small thing though - there was no sticker inside - found the BCID - but going by the sheer no of releases made by BookFrog today - I'm not suprised!!

Finiahsed this yesterday - my first for 2004! I am now going to rent the movie - some of the images were quite strong as I was reading - must've seen a preview at some time! Halfway through I realised that I have read a book by the same author that details his childhood and parents history set before this book - though I wouldn't have a clue where it is!!

Sleeper's superbly written, detailed but not laden with unecessary bits and pieces. This guy is able to portray so well the lives of the boys before and after - without turning it into a sob story. It is real and tugging at the strings, but with enough humour and insight to make you keep reading and wanting to know what happened.

Highly recommended - thanks Bookfrog! Will now go place on my TBReleased pile...

Released at Bar Italia - the shop next to Civic Video...in the Ladies Loo - above the hand dryer - actually perched precariously on top of the hand dryer - I don't think someone will catch it - more liekly they'll get hit by it! Hope I end up finding out whose hands it ends up in...
