Winner of the Orange Prize 2011. The story of Natalia's search for where and how her Grandfather died intertwines with the story of her Grandfather and his love of tigers, the deathless man, and the tiger's wife. Set in the Balkans in World War II and in the aftermath of the recent war, the book is very well written and an enjoyable read.

Out of the box and onto my bookshelf, with thanks
What a wonderful book! The author blends the story of a woman's search for her grandfather's last movements with an almost fairy-tale like journey through the memories of her grandparents lives, in the villages of the Yugoslavia of old and the new Balkan countries. At times it is almost brutal in its depiction of the way superstition informs the lives of the people, and also in how deeply ingrained the bitterness and fearfulness brought about by the independence or partition of the Balkan. The stories flow seamlessly, weaving myths and truths in a brilliant and bewitching style. I did feel however I lost a sense of who Natalia was until the final chapters when her fearlessness drew the narrative together. Truly wonderful..
