In August 1999, Freeda Hayes was diagnosed with an aggressive form of kidney cancer. When she died in a hospice some months later, she had been in intense pain and had repeatedly asked to be allowed to die. Hospice staff thought her sudden death suspicious, and shortly her brother and sister were charged with her murder.
