Awesome books - and part of my readings on the human exploration of Mars. The books are all listed at the page on Red Mars. It was initially a little disappointing as it is a much juxtaposed story of the first flight to Mars if Spiro Agnew had had his way in this alternative history. It is largely concerned with the development of Apollo modules as a Mars lander and very well researched and convincing, so although it is a very straight story expressing considerable realism rather than excitement or plot twists, it was a fine work of hard science fiction.
Off to Philip Mudd as part of a Mars collection.

The story is amazing BUT I did not like the method of telling it.
Some chapters are headed with Day/Date/Year and others are headed Mission Elapsed Time Day/Hour/Min/Sec.
This jumping backward and forward took 3 points off my score, I much prefer all the story in chronological order.
