Lisa See has written an historical fiction, set in the first few years of the Chinese 'Great Leap Forward' in the late 1940s. Her characters vividly portray the deprivation of the Chinese people at the hands of Mao and his cronies, as well as their common humanity with people everywhere. An interesting and easy read.
