The Samurai's Garden

This book is fabulous! Set just before the second World War, a Chinese boy on the verge of manhood is sent to his family's summer home in Japan to recover from tuberculosis. He will rest, swim in the sea, and paint.
The people he meets and their story will transport you; classic and utterly unique! Yeah, Gail Tsukiyama!!

I was given this book by a friend in New Jersey, USA (in fact, I gave her a bookcrossing book to tempt her to join, but alas, she has not yet . . . perhaps after this book has traveled some I'll let it's journal convince her. Anyway . . .) I read and liked it, and before I got around to registering it, I lent it to another friend, who travels doing stagehand work with Broadway shows on tour. He took the book on part of the US tour of The Full Monty, and then sent it back to me.
Now I'm sending it of to the other side of the globe, to BookFrog in Austrailia. I'm hoping after it will continue it's way around the world. Enjoy!!

Oops I hadn't journalled this sorry!
I enjoyed this, a little... hrm slow? I don't know, a nice intwining of different stories coming together, as the main protagonist learns the stories of those around him.
A chinese man staying in a country town in Japan whilst Japan is currently invading China pre WWII, his perceptions and his family back in China's perceptions of the war and the Japanese presentation. His interaction with a young Japanese girl, his change of health, his friendships with lepers.
A lovely story.
give to fushmush to pass onto fuji (who is in England - its going to travel!)!
