I have always been fascinated by the Tudors but there was a long time that I didn't give them a second thought, this book changed all that when I read it when it first came out. Since then I have been hungry for anything about them, fact or fiction, books, tv shows and movies.

I thought it was time for a re read, if I'm honest I didn't find it as gripping as when I first read it but still think it is fine Tudor fiction. I'm a massive Anne fan so I'm not overly keen when she portrayed as a massive, incestuous bitch. I would love to know more about Mary Boleyn, this fictional account doesn't mention her being the whore to the King of France. And portrays her in a more innocent light.

I can never decide if the Howard girls were all just pawns or if they wanted ambition as much as their family.

This is worth reading if you are a fan of historical fiction and if you do want to watch this then I would recommend the Hollywood version over the dreadful BBC adaptation!

REVIEW:- I really enjoyed this book which is over 500 pages long. I liked the fact that it was written in the first person from the point of view of Mary, the sister of Anne Boleyn, as that really took me into the action and let me into the torrid yet exciting world of the Tudor Court. I found it rather repetitive at times inasfaras how diligently the Boleyn/Howard girls had to do the bidding of their father, uncle and especially the King. However it was a very fast-moving and compelling story.
I enjoyed the little personal details of conversations between Mary and her brother and sister and I felt so sorry for Mary when she got the "after-baby blues" and missed her children so much when she had to live within the Court and see them only when she was allowed to do so.
I was shocked by the way that babies were swaddled in Tudor times but glad that Mary and no doubt most other mothers followed their instinct and allowed the children to be free of their "bonds" whenever they could.

I was slightly disappointed at the lack of connection with Anne and Norfolk, being a local person myself so will have to research the connection elsewhere and educate myself.

As Henry VIII's story is so well known I knew what would happen at the end but it was still a very shocking thing to read once I began to feel close to the book's characters.

I shall certainly be looking out for the other books in this series.

I am reserving this book for fellow bookcrosser Snoopy56 when next we meet.

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.

I found the first half of this book a bit slow but it picked up in the second half. I remember enjoying the film because I knew nothing about Mary Boleyn so I was keen to read more about her.
This is the second book by Phillipa Gregory that I have read and I'm undecided about her style of writing - whether she uses too many modern idioms but I now have the sequel to this book so will probably read that at some point.
This book is now going to the 2017 unconvention with an added bonus of a little booklet - copies of three letters between Anne and Henry.
