I was the decoy in the "Never won a sweepstake" sweepstake! Thank you sakirmo for sending this book. I've been wanting to try this author for a while and am looking forward to it, once I have read some of the pile of books promised to others.
Congratulations on being the winner of the sweep and happy reading!

A very good story, although the Glasgow the author describes in this book, sounds so depressing and certainly not a tourist destination!

Love Denise Mina, thank you very much. And yes her Glasgow doesn't sound much fun, but the characters are rich and interesting.

The first book in a series of three with feisty journalist Paddy Meehan. 18-year-old Paddy Meehan is an excellent character, a slightly naive and confused young lady, rather struggling with the world, its expectations of her and her expectations of it, not to mention her deeply Catholic family. Her ambitions clearly don't sit comfortably with the mould tradition would deem Paddy grow into. Set in 80's Glasgow it goes away from the usual detective novel by using someone from the world of print to be the hero. This is in the days before computers had changed the industry and drink was a major player. It's a very atmospheric and effective writing piece of writing in this sense, a claustrophobic and sometimes dark piece. Unfortunately because there is so much background, I occasionally forgot about the crime: two young boys killing a toddler should really grab my attention and not let go. That said, I really did enjoy this.
