In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and English residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But sixteen years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish..

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Happy Birthday eponine38!
Thank you for this wishlist book, keeta1!The members of this birthday group have truly spoiled me :-) I look forward to reading it.
Once again, I'm late in reviewing but I read it in December and it was a real page-turner. (And that's a good thing because on 12/20 I ended up spending 6 1/2 hours at the car dealership for what I'd thought would be a quick oil change - I was so glad to have something engrossing to read or I'd have gone nuts ;-)
The story itself was gripping, and I loved the insight into the Amish way of life and the struggles of those who choose to leave it. I look forward to the next book in the series.
[Shortly after finishing it, I had lunch with a friend that I don't see too often; the first topic of conversation is always what we've read since we last met. Terry said, "my daughter gave me this book for the holidays that I'd never heard of but I loved it: it's called 'Sworn to Silence' and takes place in the Amish community". I couldn't believe my ears - what are the chances of us both reading the same thing at about the same time without having consulted about it first? :-)]

ETA: Offered in Bookstogive's Mystery/Thriller VBB in February 2014.
