This is a tough book to read. I've been reading this pretty much since I got it, with only a few breaks to read ray/ring books (which only take a day or two) and I'm still only 2/3 of the way through. I will be starting a book ray with this book, and I think it will be very slow going.
It's not slow because of the content or lack of interest. It's just that this book is not fluffy. It includes a lot of intense thoughts and topics, as well as a lot of vocabulary that I am not familiar with since the book deals primarily with Asian cultures.
I have found an excellent review of the book which has highlighted some of the finer points of the book that I may have otherwise missed. Careful though, it is comprehensive and may have spoilers.

Whooo! Have now finished! This is the sort of book where I feel there is a lot hidden within the text. I'm sure I could reread this book and learn MANY new things. This book was split into 10 books, each being an incarnation of a jati. I was well into the 8th book before I realized that the characters being reincarnated always had names beginning with the same letter. B, K, I. About this time I also noticed that each book was written in a different style. They denoted new chapters differently, some used verse, some had notations of definitions, and the first (which I have heard much complaints over) ended each chapter with a "you'll have to read the next chapter to find out what happens next!" I think this is probably because of the early timeframe in the world, perhaps this is supposed to remind readers that the story at that time probably would have been told orally around a fire or hearth, and the "tune in next time" would have been the cliffhanger until the next evening of storytelling.
I don't mind telling these things because I haven't given away story, but maybe these insights will help the next reader understand. Unfortunately I don't have time to reread now, I am sending it off on a bookray.
Hope others enjoy!

I finally finished this book! Some parts were better than others, some parts too philosophical for me. My favorite section was The Alchemist. Towards the end of the book, I got a little bored and didn't read some sections. I wanted to find out more about the changed world than was in the book. I liked reading about the jati and their incarnations.

Received in the mail--thank you!

I have started this book, but I think I'm going to read the review tabby90 referred to before I go much further. And, I'm going to have to look up what a jati is. No laughing.

Well, I'm really having a hard time getting into this book. I will give it the weekend, but after that I may just have to pass it on to the next person. I really thought it would be more historical. I am having trouble getting into all the Eastern religion stuff. That is just not my favorite topic...

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

RELEASE NOTES:

Apologies for having this so long and thank you for your patience with me. (This is why I can't do bookrings anymore - I just can't get them moving again in anything resembling a reasonable amount of time.) Anyway, this is *finally* going out the door now that I'm *finally* (horrid story -- don't ask) settled into my new home.

After a PM from tabby90, I found this book today, hiding on my bookshelf. I sure did think that I had passed it on. Mea culpa. Anyway, as soon as I get mailing info for next person on the list, I'll get it in the mail. From what I remember of the book, I thought it was an interesting premise, but I found it tedious at times and it seemed repetitive. It was a bit difficult for me to read, and it's probably not something that I would decide to read myself.
