Sounded interesting, and the cover is nice, too. Fills up me stock of english books (that isn't empty). We'll see ...
By now the book was waiting almost two years for being read by me. I couldn't say it was much of a fun reading the descriptions of the 1st world war battle fields in Flanders. It's everything but wish-wash entertainment. But what I really liked was to learn about the very proper thoughts of Private Dunne. His fears, his doubts, his hopes. And that having hope means to have an interest in surviving. In parallel I found it most interesting to see how homeland can change while you're away - especially in the times of war. Coming back full of hope and joy and finding everything changed and yourself so to say homeless must be a horror. In that sense I would almost think that the end of the book is a happy end (for Private Dunne).
Really impressing book!
