A call to arms for liberal minded Americans for the 2004 presidential elections -- DEFEAT BUSH!

In his usual in-your-face style Moore makes it very clear that Bush and his corporate sponsors are quite willing to dismantle the traditional values of America including democracy itself in the interests of lining their own pockets and consolidating power in the hands of a tiny elite. Moore makes the point very strongly that everyone who is not already part of the millionaires and billionaires club -- whether they call themselves liberals or conservative, Greens, Republicans or Democrats -- will find themselves poorer both in monetary terms and in terms of basic freedoms if these hoodlums are not stopped. And Moore does offer some concrete ideas about how they can be stopped.

It might seem strange that, as a Canadian, I am so concerned to see the corporate puppets and privatization pirates defeated in the United States, but mini-Bushes like Gordon Campbell here in BC are sprouting up all over the place in our country too, rushing to privatize health care, utilities, and schools and to sell off our forests and water. NAFTA, WTO, FTAA are just as bad for the average citizen in Canada as they are for low and middle income workers in the United States. So we have a stake.

I would like to see as many people as possible read this book, so given the time sensitive nature of the subject, I would ask people who do sign up for the Book Ring to make a commitment to read it immediately and get it back in the mail within a week.

Please send me a PM if you would like to be on the list.

This is the USDUDE(1) copy of the book. So many people requested to be on the list that I have purchased three more copies to send out on a second US Ring, a Canadian Ring and a European Ring. Check out journal entries and comments at the USDUDE(2) Ring, the CanDUDE Ring, the EuroDUDE Ring and the PacificDUDE Ring.

You know the drill -- journal the book when it arrives, read the book as expiditiously as you can, contact the next person on the list to confirm that he/she still wants the book and to get a postal address, send the book off, and make another journal entry (with insightful comments) to say that the book is on its way to the next reader.

And while you are waiting for the book check out Moore's DUDE, WHERE'S MY COUNTY? website.

Received today, along with a great RABCK...a beautiful, signed children's book! My Godson will be thrilled, thank you!
And now, I'll get right to "Dude" so I can hurry it along its way.

A 10, not because it is necessarily the best book I've ever read, but because it is so important. A vital call to arms for a lamentably lazy electorate to undo the damage done to this country since Bush took office.

Dude has arrived in Virginia! Due to ecoboy's request that we push this one round quickly, I'm going to break with my usual rule and read this straight away - looks like it should be a quick one, from the way fsr44 whizzed through it, so it won't hold up anything else I'm reading too much. It's the least I can do - I can't vote, not being a citizen, but I can at least help this book get around the US as quickly as possible!

Journal Entry 7 by Kernow8 from Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Monday, December 8, 2003
Again, a 10 given not for the writing but for the content! Fascinating and unbelievable in places (dead peasants insurance!?!) were it not for the many reputable sources quoted throughout the book. As I said before, I can't vote and I'll be out of the country by the time the elections come round anyway, but reading this made me wish I could take part and help out (which I will - I'm going to buy a copy to share with my husband and neighbors, who are liberals and I'll probably just be preaching to the converted, but if that has a knock on effect and they start sharing the book with all their like-minded friends then hopefully there will be some kind of practical impact from my part in this bookring come November 2004)

I'm British. In 1979 when I was almost 10, Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Party came into power. My parents' politics leant towards the left so even then I knew this was a bad thing. It took 19 years to get them out. Let's not let that happen here!

Incidentally, the knock-on effects from 9/11 have definitely impacted my life here. I used to write a few letters to leaders of repressive regimes in support of better human rights - Amnesty International projects. My husband was always a bit concerned about the risks involved in this. The one day I wrote one to the White House - I believe it was a request to seriously consider the effect of war on the civilian population of Iraq. When I mentioned it to my hubby, he was extremely anxious that my actions could cause the FBI to scrutinize our every move and find some pretext for expelling us from the country - something that wouldn't go down to well on our records or with his employer. So I haven't written any more letters since then. I also haven't yet bought Stupid White Men or any other books which could be taken to be anti-Bush for fear of the Patriot Act. So every time I hear any patriotic references to Liberty or Freedom, I laugh. I wish it wasn't like this, but it is.

Let's keep this book moving! Off to cyber-librarian today or tomorrow...

I received this on Saturday 12/13 in the mail from Kernow8 in VA. It was on my wishlist for being on the USA Today bestseller top 10 list for 3 weeks (#3 on 10/12; #5 on 10/19; and #9 on 10/26. Thanks for letting me be part of this bookring, ecoboy.

c. 2003 -- 217 pages + Notes and Sources + Acknowledgments -- Hardcover -- Nonfiction: Takes on George W. Bush, Democrats in Congress and other hot-button issue

Inside Flaps: When the powers-that-be succeeded in ignoring -- and then silencing -- the nation's widespread dissent over war, one man stood on an Oscar stage and, in front of a billion people, outed the commander in chief for his fictitious presidency and his fictitious war. Now, just a few months later, those words have remarkably become the accepted truth of the land.

Yes, Michael Moore is the scourge of "Stupid White Men" everywhere. He's taken on fat cats, gun nuts, lying politicians. "The Guardian" describes him as "a wake-up call, a kick in the mental backseat." And now he's back -- daring to ask the most urgent question of these perilous times: "Dude, Where's My Country?"

A brilliant act of sedition, this book reveals:
* How to stop terrorism: Stop being terrorists!
* How to banish Bush in 2004: Run Oprah!
* How Mike should spend that new tax cut Bush gave him: I'm letting the readers of this book decide what I should do with the extra loot!
* How to sift through all the whoppers about 9/11 and the Iraq War: I have a few questions for you, Mr. Bush -- questions, it seems, you've never been asked ...
* How to recognize the conservative right for what it is: A dying species, thrasing and flailing in its final days.
and, most important,
* How to effect the kind of change that just may save this country. Fearless, funny, and furious, Michael Moore's new book is the call to arms we've all been waiting for, the kind of book that comes along once every so often that rallies the citizens with humor and insight -- and changes the course of the country.

I'm almost done reading this book (finished 12/25) and will mail it out after Christmas. Thanks ecoboy for the bookring. :-) I agree with about a third of the book (like ch. 3 "Oil's Well That Ends Well" a futurist interview with his great-grand-daughter) ... and disagree with about a third of the book (like ch. 6 "Jesus W Christ"). The remaining third (or more) is extremely thought provoking!! I just took Environmental Issues (biology course) this last semester in college ... and see many of the same topics in both books ... just different approaches in discussing them. I'm very glad for the opportunity to be reading it. People to watch ... Dennis Kucinich and Howard Dean ... Gen. Wesley Clark ... Tom Hanks ... Oprah! ;-)

I'll do "marching order" #9 "Take a Nonvoter to Lunch -- and to Vote!" I was telling my 18 y/o daughter about this vote and she started asking questions about how to register, etc. My goal for the year is to help her register to vote and encourage her to become a life-long informed voter. Having lunch together that day sounds like fun!!

I especially love Moore's story in the introduction about a group of librarians saving his book "Stupid White Men" from the publishers. Talk about ROFL when he said librarians were more scarey than terrorists. If there's ANYthing you don't say to a librarian ... it's the words "ban" and "censor." That story was the greatest!!! Librarians Unite!! LOL

The UPS guy just handed me the box this book arrived in. Can't wait to start it and send it on it's way again once I'm done. :D

*** June 16, 2004***

It was an interesting read, but very, very repetitive. I don't particularly feel that this gives an unbiased view of information about things that were happening around the time of 9/11 inside our government, but I do believe quite a bit of what he does have to say. On the upside... he does bring forth some very interesting points and I feel I learned a lot (being politically ignorant most of my life) and will look forward to reading more by him, but also by those who have different viewpoints. :D

As obnoxious as he is, MM does at least inspire me to get involved and stop ignoring politics and politicians. He makes a lot of interesting points.

I do find it hugely hypocritical of him to preach the gospel of "You'll never be rich! Horatio Alger's rags-to-riches theme is a myth!" and bitch about common people thinking they can one day achieve the American dream of being a multi-millionnaire--when he has done just that! If a guy like him could do it, why shouldn't most Americans think that they could do it too?

Thanks for sharing! I'm ready to send it where it needs to go next. Ecoboy, is that back to you?
