Everything about this book was promising. The cover, the title and the blurb on the back made it seem like I was set for a pretty awesome action packed modern/historical murder mystery. But....

This book was awful. When I closed this book, I uttered out loud "Thank fuck that's over". I honestly don't know why I carried on reading. I should have given up so many times, but I just keep turning pages to see if it would get any better, it didn't.

The characters in this book are so unrealistic and stupid, I don't even know where to start. Kate is perfectly happy to go chasing after a secret, when the person who tells her about it, is someone she doesn't even like and then happens to turn up dead. She never questions that her journey around the world, they fly back and forth to the UK and America, I don't know how many times! is being funded by someone else. She doesn't want to go to the police, why not? That's the first thing I would do if someone turned up dead.

Talking of the police, maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure UK policemen don't go globe trotting, pretty sure they would just pass the problem on to the American police, not just catch a plane over there.

Everyone else was just there to end up dead or be a plot twist or maybe another plot twist. Duh duh duhhhhhhh!

The historical parts were OKAY but if I'm honest, I just wasn't following what was going on, not even 100% sure what Shakespeare secret was. By the end I didn't even care. This book could have been amazing but it was terrible. AVOID.

Received as part of the Book and Book mark sweepstake! I won - Yippeee! Don't worry that you didn't like this redfox5. One of the things I like about bookcrossing is seeing where opinions on books match or differ. I recently read One Day by David Nicholls ad hated it but lots of other people love it. Will journal my thoughts once I've read it. ;-)

So, like redfox5, I found a lot of this book ludicrous and unrealistic. This is something I would have been able to overlook by just accepting that it was going to be silly, however, instead of just sticking with this, the author then tried to be far too clever. From about two thirds of the way in she began to introduce all kinds of really complicated connections which were utterly baffling because her writing wasn't very good. To get a few pointers, she should have read something like "the Name of the Rose" where Eco has many threads and puzzles but keeps you hooked and makes it seem effortless.
Will release out into the unsuspecting world soon. ;-)

Thanks bookfrogster for the surprise book! I put this book on my wishlist after reading good comments about it, and a small example. So it's really interesting to see your negative thoughts about it. :) Let's see, I'll read the book and let you know my opinion.

Thanks also for the great Edinburgh postcard! I've wanted to visit it, and hopefully one day I will.

Whenever a book is compared to The Da Vinci Code, I'm not sure should I read it or not. DVC was bad. So 'Plot twists worthy of DVC' - yes, there were A LOT of plot twists and murders to keep the reader entertained. Sadly, the writing was as bad as in DVC and the author made the wrong decision to pour all she ever read about Shakespeare into one novel. The result was an awkward combination of historical characters, professors, Shakespeare trivia, scavenger hunt and conspiracy theories. None of them working together at all. And I haven't yet talked about the modern characters... No, I'm not interested in reading the sequel which apparently was written after "the huge success".

Thank you, mecu. What a lovely surprise was waiting for me in the mailbox! It will definitely be interesting to read this, the previous journal entries really made me curious about the book :-)

I was forewarned by the previous readers that the book is not good. So my expectations were very low :-) And maybe that is the reason I managed to read the book (in two parts as I read about a dozen other books while this one was on hold). The characters were indeed stupid, especially Kate who makes bad decisions one after another. There was not such to like in her. Ben was slightly more interesting but even there the author had made him almost a caricature too. All other characters were just too weird. The historic bit about all the lords and ladys were a mess, you just couldn't keep up with, too many Wills so to speak. And far too many twists in the plot, after 250 pages you usually start to wait for the ending but this one just went on and on. And the ending, what an anticlimax that made basically all that had happened so far kind of unnecessary. If you chase a secret, then you better make it a good one. All in all, I was not let down as I was not expecting much but this book would have benefited a lot if it has a good editor who is not afraid to tell the author that too much is too much.
