Journal Entry 1 by Secretariat from Carlsbad, California USA on Wednesday, November 12, 2003
This fascinating historical novel takes an actual event in history to a new level. In 1854 at a peace conference in Fort Laramie, a prominent Northern Cheyenne chief requested of the U. S. Army authorities the gift of one thousand white women as brides for his young warriors. Because theirs is a matrilineal society in which all children born belong to their mother's tribe, this seemed to the Cheyenne to be the perfect means of assimilation into the white man's world. The request was, of course, never honored, but Jim Fergus wrote this novel as if it had. It is a gripping and triumphant story of one woman who made the journey not only to a land but to a people and culture she had never experienced before.

While presented as history, this tale of fiction had me engrossed from the first few pages. The tale of May Dodd, an intelligent, passionate woman in the 1870's kept me involved to the end. Thanks so much Secretariat for including me on this bookring. I really enjoyed this story and plan to look for more of Mr. Fergus' work.

My, what a facinating book. Fergus presents this "woman's journal" remarkably well for a man. The beauty of the descriptions, the character of Chief Little Wolf, the community of the Cheyenne -- all lyrically told. I enjoyed the book enormously. Thank you, Secretariat, for sharing!!

Will have in mail to Rubij on my next trip to post office.

I really do think, that back in the 1800s, the main character was a little promiscuous. A pretty good read.

Got this in the mail on Monday (13/9)! It was a nice surprise and one I wasn't expecting (I'd kinda forgotten about the book), took just over 2 months to arrive from the US!!! But it is now safe in my hands and 3rd on my TBR list so I'll get to it soon!!

Journal Entry 18 by TramGirl from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, October 12, 2004
This was an interesting book, a little slow to start but once I got into it I wanted to find out what happened to the 'Indian brides', whether they had their babies, left, died etc. It was well written and often I wondered imagine if the agreement had been originally too, interesting outcome...I also liked the little bit of American Indian history it introduced me to. I may look for more books on the topic.

Journal Entry 21 by Kernow8 from Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Thursday, January 6, 2005
An excellent read. Despite my being a bit stop-start about reading it - we were visiting people all over the place over Christmas and the New Year and I couldn't get much reading done - it held my attention, which a lot of books wouldn't have done under the circumstances. It made me want to visit the western prairies - in the summer though I think. I loved the descriptions of the Cheyenne way of life, the characters were interesting and the story was fascinating. A bit reminiscent of "Lord of the Flies" in its portrayal of all of humanity (both colonisers and natives) as tending towards evil - except that this one had female characters too, who by and large managed to avoid falling into evil ways themselves.

Sent to Morgail this morning. Thanks Secretariat!

Journal Entry 22 by Morgail from Louisville, Kentucky USA on Friday, January 14, 2005
Arrived yesterday! Looking forward to starting this one.

Journal Entry 23 by Morgail from Louisville, Kentucky USA on Friday, January 21, 2005
I could not put this book down. It was a wonderful, moving story with interesting characters and great descriptions of Cheyenne life and the Western wilderness. I especially enjoyed reading about how the various white women adapted to life among the Cheyenne & how some of the characters changed as the story progressed.

Both TigerLily4 and Arugh48187 have received their own copies of this book, so the book will be off to visit Amusedbythis.
Sent 1-28-05.

This was a great read. I had problems putting it down. It is the wonderful story of a woman who volunteers to join the Cheyenne tribe in an attempt to assimilate the tribe peacefully. Thanks for sharing!

Wow. What an amazing read! I found myself engrossed and unable to put the book down. There's only thing I did find disappointing, and that was the main character, May Dodd. I find it very hard to believe that a well-bred woman of the 1800's would think and act the way she did. Her love life seemed impossible for a woman of her background, but then again, perhaps there was a reason for Fergus portraying her the way he did. Obviously she hated her upbringing and tried to break free of class barriers. But otherwise, I can't complain. The story held me gripped until the end. Definitly worth reading again sometime!
Thanks again for sharing this great book, Secretariat!

Journal Entry 29 by Secretariat from Carlsbad, California USA on Sunday, August 7, 2005
It's back in my hands after almost two years. Even though it has been read by more than 25 people, it's in remarkably good shape. Thank you to everyone who joined this ring. It was my first and I learned several important things from it (like: set the reading list geographically [not first come, first served] and keep the list under 15 people [you can always add on at the end]). Happy Bookcrossing.

Journal Entry 31 by luv2sewtjr from Greencastle, Pennsylvania USA on Monday, December 4, 2006
This book was a reread for me, and I have to say that this book wasn't as good the second time around. I already could appreciate the time and place so I focused more on the characters and storyline. It was a bit too much of a romance novel to me the second time around...I wondered if Fergus was attempting a Shakespearean-type love story given all the twists and turns.

Thanks for helping me out with my book club, Secretariat. I am sending this off to be released at an OBCZ.
