(from the back of the book)

Robert Neville is the last living man on Earth....but he is not alone. Every other man, woman and child on Earth has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood.
By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for dawn.

I read this book after reading another one of Richard Matheson's books called "Hell House" and really enjoyed both.

Got this book today!! Thanks, Arwen! It looks really interesting and I can't wait to read it!

Update 18th March 2004: Well, my brother had time to read this before I did coz he was intrigued by the plot line, and he told me he was really disappointed coz it was more scientific than thrilling. After I read it, I have to say I agree with him. I mean, it's an interesting book and thought-provoking, and of course, entirely plausible. But it wasn't what I was expecting after reading the blurb. :P It's still a good read, just don't expect thrilling horror.

Will pass on to the next reader asap!

Okay, this sucks, I'm poor, and now I've got another book to track down for my PC!

My favorites were I am Legend, Witch War, and Mad House.. but there isn't really one that I didn't like. Dance of the Dead was a bit strange.. but, not bad. I am Legend was very different than the run of the mill Vampire stories.. Witch War was just great.. (they seem so cute. lol) and Mad House.. well, let's just say I've had many days were it seems like my house is out to get me.. stubbed toes, splinters, cuts.. and so this one was great.. Like making something that is normal.. (i.e bad days essentially) and spinning it into a What if ...

Now it's going to be heading on to the next person.. hope they enjoy it as well..

I liked this book. I am Legend was an interesting twist to all we have read about vampires, but I was a little disappointed in the end. I was hoping against hope for Robert Neville. Still made for a good read. The other short stories were a bonus as I love short stories.
Sending off to grover3d as next in line.

It's here and I've already begun - thanks!

I've heard about this book for years, but had never read it and I'm glad that I did. This is what I think of as an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" type scenario (you against the world, with no hope) which always scared me to death as a kid. The book is well written with great suspense (I hated the part about the dog) and ended the way it had to end.

Not crazy about any of the short stories - most of them sounded like "Twilight Zone" episodes (and maybe they were, eventually). Thanks so much for sharing this!

Journal Entry 16 by First-Noel from San Antonio, Texas USA on Thursday, October 28, 2004
Ok, I didn't know this book was going to end in the middle of the physical book and start short stories. It was very abrupt and unsettling and left me with nothing to read at lunch time. I had thought I had 1/2 the book still to read. UGH!!

BTW, LOVED the I Am Ledgend story. I had heard that it was trite and so on from other BC'ers. I don't know about that, I just know I liked it.

Journal Entry 17 by First-Noel from San Antonio, Texas USA on Thursday, October 28, 2004
Another little side note, the story Prey was made into a Creepshow (80's tv show) episode. I've always loved that one. I was happy to read the original story and finally find out the author. A nice surprise.

Interesting short story collection. I am not really a fan of short stories – so I didn’t really like the very short two pagers. But, the first story “I am legend” really scared me. I got nightmares over that one. It was really more of a zombie story then a vampire story. I will look in to whether Richard Matheson has written any novels and maybe give one a try. My favorites were - I am legend and The Funeral.

I did finish this last week and have been waiting for an address for the next participant. I’ll send this on very soon.

I saw the comment from Stephen King on the back cover and thought it was a bit strange - but the type of horror Richard Matheson writes really has inspired some of Stephen King's work, it's a very similar type of storytelling, and the type of horror that I most enjoy - unlike one I read recently where I felt quite disgusted by the stories as they were more disgusting than scary. These were more of a story with a twist, and were terrific to read.
I really liked 'I Am Legend', you can imagine the horror of being the only person left alone in a pretty-much abandoned city and having to scavenge from supermarkets etc. The short stories were a bit up and down, but in general excellent. Thanks for the opportunity to read this - it will be in the mail to BunRab tomorrow.

Received as part of a book ring.
Some older stories wear better than others; these weren't that great. I like the vampire genre, but the title story, "I am Legend" seems dated (not to mention more than a bit sexist) after five decades. A few of the other stories in the book were fun to reread. And I do remember that when most of these were first published, they *weren't* cliches - they only seem so now because so many other stories were written after them!
Will contact the next person on the listy-list-list.
