The Story of I Love Lucy
Bart Andrews
A Compendium of Classic Comdeia
This by no means is the only book on the phenomenon of I Love Lucy, but it is definitely a treasure for millions of fans of the classic television show. Published in 1977, this book was released in the still burning bright afterglow of the series original audiences. Author Bart Andrews goes to great lengths to provide fans a memorable and thorough account of the show. Chapters dedicated to the enormous popularity of the show as well as the rocky romance the Ricardo’s’ experienced.
I am amazed at the incredible amount of references used in creating this book; Andrews put the rubber to the road in tracking down the best quotes from industry leaders, insiders, actors, and even the family to create this honorable tribute to the most amazing comedy couple of all time. Readers will appreciate the most unforgettable quotes about the show. There are many “Aha!” moments awaiting the devoted fans as Andrews summarizes all 179 episodes. One of the funniest quotes, and perhaps one of the most revealing is shared in the first chapter on the show’s popularity, “Since I said ‘I Do,’ there are so many things we don’t!” It is with this thorough interviewing and research that Andrews establishes this book as an absolute must-have for any true fan of the show.
The book also contains several pages of pictures. These pictures will remind fans of the incredible laughs associated with familiar and unforgettable episodes. A memorable album of family and career pictures is also included. The paperback quality of this book does not lend these photos to incredible clarity or permanence, but they do make the book that much more appreciated. True fans of the show can find sources for buying prints and glicees in the captions of each photo.
An index, timetable, and trivia quiz round out this book’s excellent features. The index is very thorough, spanning ten pages. Even a note about the most definitive fan club in America, The Lucy Fan Club, has its own page. The trivia page is challenging for leisure fans, but not daunting for die-hards. Of course, the book’s chapter organization is brilliant too. In the end, one of my favorite features is the summary of each episode, which includes original airdate, cast, title, episode number and synopsis. This book is definitely a collector’s item.
