Synopsis:
"The corpse is missing its head and is dressed in American clothes. Found by a Tibetan prison work gang on a windy cliff, the grisly remains clearly belong to someone too important for Chinese authorities to bury and forget. So the case is handed to veteran police inspector Shan Tao Yun. Methodical, clever Shan is the best man for the job, but he too is a prisoner, deported to Tibet for offending someone high up in Beijing's power structure. Granted a temporary release, Shan is soon pulled into the Tibetan people's desperate fight for its sacred mountains and the Chinese regime's blood-soaked policies. Then, a Buddhist priest is arrested, a man Shan knows is innocent. Now time is running out for Shan to find the real killer."

What a fascinating-looking cover!

This book traveled from the Netherlands so it could be shared at our book festival in May - thank you very much!

(At the time, I thought the book looked interesting, but I didn't have time to read it before the festival, and I felt I should release it since that was the whole reason why it was sent to me!)

August 2017 note: I finally read this as an e-book borrowed from the library (I didn't have time to read the books that were sent for the book festival back in 2013, even though this one did look interesting).

I found a lot of the Chinese political/government stuff confusing at best (and more often than not distressing), but this quote in particular jumped out at me:

"Shan envied the proletariat its ability to embrace the most important lesson of their society, that the goal of any worker was not to do a good job, but to do a correct job.

The kiosks that housed public phones were being painted, too, although Sergeant Feng could not find a single phone that worked."

No, I wouldn't find that frustrating at all....nope. :(

Released 10 yrs ago (5/18/2013 UTC) at Hawaii Book & Music Festival in -- Mail or by hand-rings, RABCK, meetings, Hawaii USA

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

To be released at our third annual pop-up Skygate OBCZ during the 2013 Hawaii Book and Music Festival.

So...a funny thing happened today.

I finally read this book as an e-book borrowed from the library (see the comments I added to my February 2013 journal entry so it wouldn't look like a wild catch). I finished it a couple of days ago.

I'm participating in an East Asia bookbox, and I thought this book was excellent - although it didn't make me think any better of the Chinese regime - so I thought I'd try to find a secondhand copy to add to the box. Went to one of the few remaining used bookstores in town to see if they had a copy. They did. I pulled it off the shelf and...started laughing. It was THIS book, the exact same copy I released unread at the book festival in 2013 - over 4 years ago. (Larger photo here.)

So obviously I was meant to go there today and buy it for the bookbox! :p

Also, that answers my question about whether Jelly's/Idea's would buy BookCrossing books. I did talk to the bookbuyer about BC once, several years ago when I was looking for a book for a challenge and asked for her help, but this is the first time I've actually found a BC book there.

Reserved for possible inclusion in AlterEgoZoe's Far East Bookbox.

removing from the far east book box to read. mysteries can be a fun, fictional way to learn more about other cultures.

fun to see the book started its journey in Friesland, which I visited a mere 36 years ago :-) I'm sure nothing has changed.

I really thought I reviewed this immediately after reading it. It uses a mystery to explore contemporary Tibet under the control of China. A great atmospheric introduction to the thought of Tibetans, contemporary political issues, the landscape, all while chasing around on a detective quest. It didn't call out to be read, until I wanted to have it ready for a bookbox coming my way, but once I started it, it was really gripping. Recommended.

Came home in the Far East box

When he looked up again Tas had gone. Rising to join the others, he caught sight of something small and abandoned on the floor. "Tas you forgot your pipe." He picked it up and then saw words carved into the wood he had not seen before. Find the music, find the magic.
"Did you carve this?"
Tas did not turn. "Yes," he said, reluctantly. "I have to leave it."
"But, Tas, why?"
Tas squared his shoulders as though firming some resolve. But still he did not turn. "Because the shepherd said that it could only be used once. Thats why I can't get the pipe to play that song-or any song. I've used the magic." He took a deep breath and went on. "And he said that once I found the magic I had the pass the pipe on." he paused and then he did turn, a scamp's humor in his long brown eyes. "It's going to be a long winter. I'm going to leave it here for someone else to find."
