Und er bezeichnet die Form seiner sachlichen Erinnerung. Walter Fabers Leben bestimmt ein technologisch-mathematisches Weltbild. Durch eine Reihe von 'Zufällen' wird die Identität des Ingenieurs erschüttert: Zuerst lernt er den Bruder seines Jugendfreundes kennen. Joachim hatte Hanna, damals Fabers Freundin, geheiratet. Dann trifft Faber auf einer Schiffspassage die junge Sabeth. Er begleitet sie auf ihrer Reise durch Südfrankreich und Italien bis nach Griechenland. Er will das junge Mädchen heiraten. Geschickt gelingt es ihm immer wieder, seinen Verdacht wegzuwischen. Doch Sabeth ist seine Tochter. Zum Inzest kommt am Ende auch noch, dass er den tödlichen Unfall Sabeths nicht verhindern konnte.
