Thank you, soffitta, for sending the book to me. I got it when it was still quite cold in the UK and I marvelled about the postcard of Avila, thinking it must be a bit warmer there. The book travelled to Germany with me (where it is nice and warm at the moment), and I am nearly through and enjoying it tremendously.
More, when I will have finished it.

I liked this book a lot. It describes (partially quite gritty) the situation people found themselves in when they emigrated to New Zealand in the 19th century, the hardship, they had to endure building a new life in the dusty plains of the country. The story becomes colourful through the interwoven stories of the Maori woman who cared for a white child and also the fate of the Chinese people in New Zealand.
And of course the influence gold has on the immigrants who hope to find their fortune, when they discover "The Colour" on the goldfields.
I could not put this book away till I had finished it with much regret.

From Amazon:

Joseph and Harriet Blackstone emigrate from Norfolk to New Zealand in search of new beginnings and prosperity. But the harsh land near Christchurch threatens to destroy them almost before they begin. When Joseph finds gold in the creek he is seized by a rapturous obsession with the voluptuous riches awaiting him deep in the earth. Abandoning his farm and family, he sets off alone for the new gold-fields over the Southern Alps, a moral wilderness where many others, under the seductive dreams of 'the colour', are violently rushing to their destinies.

By turns both moving and terrifying, The Colour is about a quest for the impossible, an attempt to mine the complexities of love and explore the sacrifices to be made in the pursuit of happiness.

Just a status update to let you know that this book is still with me.
Haven't got 'round to reading it yet, but will start later today.

Together with the other book (Orlando by Virginia Woolf) it is reserved for Tubereader when I'm done.

It has taken me a while to read this book, had troubl getting into it, at first. Read a few pages, put it away, picked it up again. That lasted untill I had more room in my head to be busy with Joseph's and Harriet's struggle to start a new life in New Zealand, untill their lifes crossed the ones of the people on the Orchard farm. Then the story itself got more interesting, even a bit adventurous.
At times sad, I think this is a beautifully written story about man's struggles. Greed, love, betrayal, adventure, loyalty, they all are part of the story that is told, mixed with desciptions of New Zealand's harsh climate and part of the history of gold digging there.

Really liked the book! Still waiting for Tubereader's reply to a PM about another book I have for them. I guess they'll all travel together in a while.

Journal Entry 11 by Tubereader at Madrid, Madrid Spain on Wednesday, March 12, 2014

This book arrived many months ago but it was a really bad personal timing for me (big health issues both for me and my mum) and I was not home, did not have regular access to the internet and had quite a lot going on at the time and could not get myself to organise all my life, let alone log into bookcrossing and get my books registered, updated, etc. sorry for that.

I am glad I was the last one in the ray, it might be a little while before I get to read it, but it is definitely on my TBR pile. Thanks for sharing and sorry for keeping this book "lost" for such a long time.
