A young woman - who strangely not even has a name - travels with friends to the place of her childhood to search after her missing father. Separation is a major theme. The woman is isolating herself and dives into her contradictory feelings until she becomes an estranged half-animal, hiding naked in the wood and destroying every trace of man - that is, hacking the furniture into splinters, smashing the crockery, tearing the clothes and just leaving havoc.
I did not like this nameless woman who is the author's alter ego. I especially detested the way she proved her coolness by impaling a live frog onto a fish-hook - I instantly started to hate her. Why have feminists always to corroborate their equality by copying the most abominable behaviour of males?
Nevertheless an impressive second novel; the language is terrific. Like most Atwood novels, it will haunt you for a long time ...
