Penelope lives in a vast crumbling mansion that they can't afford to maintain with her beautiful young widowed mother. When she meets Charlotte, they are brought together by their mutual love of singer Johnny Ray. Tries really hard to be 'I Capture the Castle' but unfortunately doesn't manage it - for me, the attempt to capture the essence of the 1950s gets lost among the details of the in crowd's love lives.

On its way to leahjett who chose it from Diane-Fraser's Shrinking VBB round 9. Enjoy! :)
I arrived home from holiday to this book (: I swear it was like christmas!! Thank you so much, ill post more once read and keep it travelling.
I totally agree with greenbadger, this book could have been brilliant with a little more information on the fifties.
Surprised to see the author herself is quite young! My grandmother read this before me and she said it was "quite good", but i disagree... I didn't like the mothers character, maybe because I can see bits of my own mothers personality in her.
A nice wee book to read whilst trying to avoid my essays that are due. What also annoyed me was the amount of free time this girl had?! I certainly wish I did.
