A very powerful book.

I'm not usually keen on books in epistolic format (that is, in the form of letters or diary entries), but this worked well for me.
You're aware that time is passing, especially when Nettie's letters to Celie are finally discovered, but it comes as a surprise to read that at least thirty years have elapsed since the outset.

I'll be posting this to billhookbabe in the next few days.

Received inthe post today. Will send it on by the end of July. Thanks busybooklover.

I was looking forward to reading this classic, but also wary of it. I hate reading about people hurting and the and I had only seen a small bit of the film, which involved some violence of some sort. I turned over straight away.
Having said all that I was happily surprised about the way the book is written, which I found easier as I read before sleep. It was very gentle and Celie, the main character who writes to God in her diary, comes across as a lovely and uncomplicated soul who has been dealt some very hard blows eary on in life. I was really angry for her at times, with the treatment received from her father and then her husband. I wanted to shout for her. I am glad she could do that for her self in the end.
The letters from Nettie, her sister are also fascinating. There is so much to this book that I think I might have to buy my own copy to re read it.
I like the ending too, won't talk about it here so as not to spoil it for everyone else.

What an amazing book. Like minx2012 said, it is incredibly powerful and the characters are so wonderfully created, even the awful ones. I loved the stories from Africa and the unlikely friendship Celie developed at the end. This book deserves every bit of the praise it has gotten.

I am currently in Montreal, Canada so I'm going to wait until I get back to the States to mail it. This will be on Sunday so the book should be mailed out Monday. Thanks everyone!

Update - the book was sent off Monday, August 16 to stellarv in Brazil.
