It's an excellent period piece, a mystery set in turn-of-the-century New York, where the crime is investigated by a practitioner in the new art of psychiatry--an Alienist. Carr, an historian, brings the time and the setting to life. His characters are intriguing, decently realized, and include Teddy Roosevelt.
