The first in the "Neanderthal Parallax" trilogy, we meet scientists in Canada working underground at a neutrino detector when something goes horribly wrong. A person has mysteriously appeared in a large sealed tank of water, and nearly drowns. Once recovered, we learn he's a quantum physicist from a parallel dimension - one where Neanderthals became the dominant species instead of homo sapiens.

Although some have called this book "yet another fish-out-of-water" novel, it has some interesting ideas about how a Neanderthal society could have developed and how our world would respond to the sudden appearance of a Neanderthal. The more interesting story line is in the Neanderthal universe, where the society is prosecuting the scientist's co-worker as a murderer!
