Well, it took me quite a while to get round to reading but my, what a delightful novel with such lovely characters. How could you not love Cassandra and her family - Topaz, Mr Mortmain and even the village vicar ! Wonderfully written - bittersweet and yet very real !

An interesting story with well-defined characters. Problem is, I could not get myself to care for most of them. It has some remarkable descriptions of scenes of poverty stricken life in the dilapidated castle. However I struggled with the idea of living off other people. Even when they were starving there was no thought of work but Mortmain thought nothing of eating well at Scoatney while forgetting his children still had nothing. I would work at any job if necessary but this family were charming parasites.
