"In the late 1960s, the author spent nearly two years on the ward for teenage girls at McLean Hospital, a renowned psychiatric facility. Her memoir encompasses horror and razor-edged perceptions, while providing vivid portraits of her fellow patients and their keepers."

Received today in the mail from vinnieangel...thanks! It's at the top of my TBR list as I want to send it along in a movie-tie in bookbox that's coming to me soon.
The writing set the tone for the book...while Susanna is in the hospital (and while she is suffering from her illness), the writing is choppy. We are given glimpses of her state of mind and her thoughts, but everything is disjointed and confusing. The chapters are exceedingly short, furthering the feeling of confusion. It's almost like the reader is on the drugs with Susanna, where some things are very clear but the rest of life is lost.
As Susanna recovers, the writing becomes more fluid and "sane." It reads more like a novel and the narrator's thoughts become more organized and clear. It feels as though the reader has survived with Susanna to the real world of relative sanity.
Very enjoyable, and a very fast read. I plan to release this in the movie tie-in bookbox.
