ED MCBAIN'S FIRST 87th PRECINCT NOVEL

Swift, silent, and deadly -- someone is knocking off the 87th Precinct's finest, one by one. The how of the killings is obvious: three .45 shots from the dark add up to one, two, three very dead detectives. The why and the who are the Precinct's headaches now.

When Detective Reardon is found dead, motive is a big question mark. But when his partner becomes victim number two, it looks like open-and-shut grudge killings. That is, until a third detective buys it.

With one meager clue, Detective Steve Carella begins his grim search for the killer, a search that takes him into the city's underworld to a notorious brothel, to the apartment of a beautiful and dangerous widow, and finally to a .45 automatic aimed straight at his head....

From my wish list, received with Eight Black Horses, another 87th Precinct Mystery. Looking forward to reading both of them.

Thanks!

I love how McBain writes dialog. I don't know what sets his dialog separate from other authors that I read, but it feels right to me. This novel was also interesting for having been written almost 50 years ago. They make reference to Dragnet, so there were already police-procedurals on television, but apparently the miranda decision hadn't happened, and the relationship between the police and the reporters was much different. It was also interesting for setting the starting point for some of the officers that are still in the Precinct in the last novels (Carella, Byrnes, and Kling). It was a great story, but I'd figured out who-done-it reasonably early.

I'm going to put this aside for another BXer with whom I've been exchanging McBain novels. I have another one I want to read and then I'll send them off.

Thanks again for the RABCK ILuvToRead2!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

RELEASE NOTES:

fungirl503 and I set up a trade in March. I offered to send her an 87th Precinct. She offered me anything from her TBR list. I picked 3 and asked that she send me one. She promised to send all 3. I sent a second 87th Precinct at that time. She has promised a lot of TBRs, so it took her a couple of months, but I recently received all three books that she promised me. I received this book and 8 Black Horses about the time that we started all of this, and they were on her wishlist, so I made a note to send them to her when I finished them. I finished the other one this weekend and sent them both off this morning.

Enjoy!

wow I could not put this book done. this was a short story but started out with a bang and ended up with fire works :0
Three cops are killed with a 45. Why are they being killed? Some of the people the police check out seem like they would be the ones that could easy be part of this. I like the way Teddy ( steve's girl) who can not speak is a very cleaver lady in this story.
I would like to write more but I am sure I will spoil this so how and don't want to do that.
