This is Steve Hamilton's first novel, introducing P.I. Alex McKnight of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This is an excellent series, and Hamilton is a fine writer.

Came to me in my mystery/thriller bookbox. Looks interesting. Thanks.
I enjoyed this one. Takes place in a small lakeside town of Paradise in Michigan's Upper Penisnula. Good writing and a brooding, guilt-ridden reluctant P.I. make for an interesting read.
From the flap: Fourteen years ago, policeman Alex McKnight was shot three times point blank and his partner was killed. He still carries one of the bullets lodged next to his heart. The perpetrator of this crime was sent to prison for life without parole. His name was Rose.
Now, someone in the small town of Paradise by the name of Rose appears to be stalking Alex. However, Rose is till in the pen and has had no contact with the outside world. Returning from a walk in the woods one evening, Alex discovers a rose on his doorstep---the calling card of the murderer. His friend, Edwin, calls him out to the scene of a murdered bookie and Alex falls under suspicion by the local sheriff.
Thus begins a series of killings of bookies and Edwin's mother hires Alex to ensure her son's safety. He reluctantly agrees and all the while there are ghostly phone calls, insane letters reminding him of things only he knows. A double mystery is going on---how could Rose be in Paradise and what is he planning to do to Alex?

My Mom got the book at a library book sale. She gave it to me after reading it. I plan to leave in in the lobby of my dorms.
