Savory from beginning to end, Like Water for Chocolate is the story of a family in Mexico that has a bit of magic encircling their lives, and plenty of good food. We follow Tita from her time as a young girl to an adult woman. She has a penchant for cooking hearty meals, and is by far the best at preparing them. The meals she makes have a bit of enchantment in them, too, and special things happen to the people that eat them. Take Gertrudis, for example, Tita's sister who became very aroused by eating some quial Tita had prepared. Taking shower to cool her desire, Gertrudis set the wooden shower aflame with her heat. Frightened, she ran from the building completely naked, until the amorous scents she was producing reached a soldier who swept her up on his horse. The two made love on horseback, until the soldier was exhausted. The next thing we know, innocent Gertrudis is working for a brothel near the border!

And although Tita may exhalt in fixing traditional family specialties, there is one family traditions that are not so wonderful. As the youngest daughter, it is Tita's job to take care of her mother for her entire life. This, above all, means no marriage. But Tita does fall in love with a young man named Pedro, who asks for Tita's hand in marriage. Of course, her mother is obstinate, and suggests that he marries Tita's sister, Rosaura. Pedro agrees, knowing that this union will put him closer to Tita. It also sets up a whole slew of strife.

Not to be forgotten, every chapter includes one of Tita's own tasty recipes. Un libro muy delicioso.
