Old penguin edition, patched up a little but much loved.
I first read this while travelling around Africa in a landrover, in the days when Nelson Mandela was still in prison.
A country Zulu parson searches for his delinquent son in Jo'burg. Lyrical, beautiful sing song style, quietly laying down a profound message.

Received today! Thanks! I've been itching to read this one so I'll get to it soon and pass it along to the next person in the ray.

Journal Entry 4 by JesseBC from Duluth, Minnesota USA on Thursday, December 18, 2003
Well, I gave this one the requisite 50 pages and I just couldn't get into it. Which is too bad because it's one of those books I've felt I "should" read. But with the clunky prose, the stilted dialogue, and very little plot movement, I began to get too bored to enjoy it. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to check out a book I've been meaning to read for a long time. This may be the type of book that if I wait a few years and try again, I will fall in love with it. But now just isn't the time for that.

I read this book years ago and loved it. I'm glad I got the chance to read it again. The lyrical style is wonderful. "Quietly profound" is a perfect description, Shylock. Thanks for sharing!

I'll be sending the book along to shazsnod this week.

I must admit I was expecting the Oprah Large Paperback and was shocked to open up to this little disheveled book. After reading all the journal entries, I admire this little novel for it's travels.
Will read asap and send off to summerbreeze! Can't wait!

I also didn't find that I could really get into this book yet, maybe the time in my life, maybe I wasn't in the right mindset, not sure. Sent today to summerbreeze. Thanx shylock! Will attempt a read another time.

I must apologize, I received this a few days ago and did not have time to journal that I got it. So now I am telling you all I got it, and I am surprised that it is not Oprah's look, but excited because it looks well read.

I just started reading this book last night. It has been crazy for me in the last few weeks and I have not had a time to sit and read a book until last night. I am enjoying this book and should be done in record time. I am sorry for taking so long.

Journal Entry 12 by bc-del-20080226 on Wednesday, June 2, 2004
I just finished reading this. It was not as good as I thought it would be, but that could just be because I heard all about the troubles from my family before. They moved from South Africa 20 years ago and I am still hearing tales of what it is like there, also I have a great Aunt that lives there and we email each other frequently.

It was still a beautiful book with the descriptions of South Africa, I feel like I have been there now with the images given to me. Also, there are a few quotes that I enjoy from the book. Especially this quote;

"There is only one thing that has power completely, and that is love. Because when a man loves, he seeks no power, and therefore he has power. I see only one hope for our country, and that is when white men and black men, desiring neither power nor money, but desiring only the good of their country, come together to work for it."

Anyway, it is time to move this book on to the next in line.

Arrived with me today!
Looking forward to this one - I love reading about other cultures and plights.

Journal Entry 14 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, September 9, 2004
This book is so beautiful - beautifully written, about beautiful characters.

Heart rending, and then warming, tale of two families bought together by horrible circumstances. Race relations in South Africa, a fresh look at the white mans perceptions of it all, and the depth of love for people. Told seperately, and then brought together, this construction certainly brings home the "there are two sides to every story". Played with my ideas of right and wrong, and had me questioning my inital thoughts on the justice.

The fragility of the book seemed to go well with the aging and grieving umfundisi. I just hope it lasts for many more reads!

Recieved today and on the bedside table ready to go.
Might see if some other Aussies want to read it before it goes to the US again - as long as that's okay with you Shylock.

Journal Entry 16 by emmafiles from Murrumba Downs, Queensland Australia on Sunday, November 14, 2004
Although this book has some lovely moments, I can't help thinking there is something wrong with a white man telling this story. Or maybe that is the whole point, that we should all listen to and share each others stories, only then can we truly be equal.

Anyway - get out Cry Freedom if you want to see an astonishingly beautiful and true South African story.

Posting the book to the USA this week (no more Aussies interested).

Really wanted to read this book, but I'm simply too far behind on my TBR stack. Mailed today to fellow bookcrosser in kernow8 in England.

Journal Entry 19 by Kernow8 from Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, January 26, 2005
This evidently much loved copy has arrived back in England. (Thanks debrayn!) As I'm last on the list, what do you want me to do with it when I've read it, Shylock?

Journal Entry 20 by Kernow8 from Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Monday, August 8, 2005
A very moving story and an important book to have read, but for some reason I found it very slow going. I loved the way Parts 1 and 2 started almost identically before diverging to tell the stories from the two different viewpoints. I was surprised at how sympathetic many of the white people were, and saddened that justice in those days was seen as upholding the law that "the people" had created when "the people" was such a small proportion of the population. Thank goodness times are fairer now, although still not perfect.

Returned to shylock so that she can take it to a meet-up, if it doesn't disintegrate in the post! Thanks Shylock!

This has come home so it can continue trvalling via Leeds meetup. Thanks for the postcards, I'll keep them in the book for future readers to see how the book has travelled.
