Malice: Book 1

This is a great book! Chris Wooding is a fantastic author and I generally like his stuff quite a lot. This one is unique though - part novel, part comic.
It's a page turner that I found enjoyably creepy at times :)
Product Description
Everyone's heard of it...but nobody's read it. Luke, Seth, and Kady have heard all the stories about Malice--a secret comic about a strange, awful world full of tricks and traps, and overseen by a sinister master of ceremonies, Tall Jake. But if the rumours are to be believed, the children in this comic are real... Luke is the first to fall into this trap--and Seth and Kady are the next to follow. They have left our world and entered the sinister comic book. The question is--can they make it out alive? From acclaimed author, Chris Wooding, a novel that's half fact, half comic--and all thrills.

I am taking this book to the Bookcrossing meeting for rureading since she is a fellow Chris Wooding fan
The raised artwork on the cover teases the reader to pick it up and open it. So many innovative and creative ways publishers try to get kids to put down their phones and read a book. :)
I liked this fast-paced novel with the comic panels as part of the plot. I wanted more of the comic, which is odd as I am not much of a graphic novel reader, but in this book I think it could have used more of the comic panels. I feel cheated by the abrupt end of the novel and I think it hurts an otherwise good story.
Took the book to the Calgary BC Meetup at the Joshua Tree Cafe today.
Brought home some pretty great books from the August meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers.
Thanks a bunch!

I was drawn by the interesting raised cover of the book. Another quick YA read.
The graphic art was roughly drawn (as is often the case) and I felt it didn't adequately support the descriptive style of the writing.
I particularly liked Kady's role in the book. Yes, agree the ending was abrupt, but it's all about selling book 2 with this type of series.

Picked up at October's meeting. Adding to my really large TBR pile, better start reading...
I'm moving, so in an effort to reduce the amount I have to move I am passing books that multiple people wanted to the next person. This is a book I want to read and therefore want back, just not until I am settled in my new place.

Wow. I was so busy reading it, I forgot to journal it, sorry guys. This was an amazing book, with really good characters. I didn't initially buy Seth's character, but once he got into Malice I was totally hooked. The use of comics for the action-y scenes is a really neat idea and I thought it worked really well even if I didn't entirely like the art style.
Taking this back to the Calgary bookcrossing group today.
Picked this up at the High Tea Christmas get together.
OK - Had to put this book down while I was still in school - it was bugging me. Once I was on break, it really snared me. Malice, the place really upset me at first but then I got into it. Not usre how I felt about the comic part - found it a bit hard to follow.
This book was left in my house some time during my open house. Guess it is my turn to read it.
This was a really cool book, I loved the cover and the overall premise. I found it creepy but in a good way. Glad I read this book during the day with all the lights on :)
The comics were interesting but I had a hard time following what happened in some of them due to the authors style of drawing. Made for an interesting read and I can't wait to read the next one, I hope it is going around our group.

Taking this to September's "Darkness" themed meeting. I would say this fits the theme nicely!

Caught at the Oct. meetup!
Time to downsize my TBR Mountain Range, will bring this book back to the group at tomorrow's meetup.
Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing July meet-up. When I saw that part of this book is like a graphic novel, I just had to pick it up.
I really like the premise; Malice is a strange, clockwork world full of deadly dangers and even if you do escape, you can't even remember being there. The notion that the comic book is real was neat, too, but I just wish that there had been more comic book sections in the novel. It just felt like the author dropped the comic book sections in when he didn't want to describe the action in great detail.
It'd be interesting to see the second book. Does Seth make it back? Is Kady okay? Do they find Havoc?

Passing on this book to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing September meet-up.
Picked up at the september bookcrossing meetup in Calgary. It's great to be back!! Looking forward to the read.
The writing in thus book was a bit juvenile, and the switches between comic book format and text were really irratic, and the switches were really frustratingly inconsistent. For those reasons I don't really feel like reading book two. But it's also a really great story and I want to know how it ends!!!
I'm so torn on if I want to read book two!
In the meantime, this book (book one) will be sent back to Calgary Bookcrossing to be enjoyed by a new reader.
