Amy O'Sullivan is approaching the "Big Three-O". Her career is at a dead-end and her love life is going nowhere fast and everyone else's is soaring.
This certainly is not a case of why does this girl, Amy, not have a boyfriend? She actually had a long-term boyfriend that she did not want to marry. It seems like a good idea to not marry him, because she probably would not have been happy with him for the rest of her life, but she seems to forget that it was she who broke it up and dwells on her unhappiness as a single and the fact that the boyfriend she rejected has moved on. She doesn't handle it well and even slides into mean behavior. Furthermore, she meets a nice man, but has a hard time appreciating his niceness. She is going to be a bridesmaid in her younger sister's wedding and in the wedding of her best friend. The book was downright boring towards the end of the book, because there was so much detail about the weddings. Possibly, a younger women who is planning a wedding would be more interested in all the wedding details. The author alludes to depression on the part of Amy to explain some self-destructive behavior but this is never addressed further, either by Amy or the author of the book. So, there are some questions about Amy that are never really answered. She does come to appreciate her new boyfriend by the end of the book, and her "career" takes off when she is presented with new opportunities.
