A Complicated Kindness: A Novel

The most depressingly hopeless, frustratingly lethargic and wallowing in stagnant, unsatisfied lives, the main character and her father start in an ambiguous storyline and stay there. Yet if only to see some imagined light at the end of a long, cloistering tunnel, I found it difficult to put down. The wryness of some of the thoughts are nearly lost, the occasional gems she comes out with or repeats from other famous characters from history could show the potential of a young girl who is smarter than this. the interesting pranks/diversions/conservations she engages in are suddenly interesting and relevant, but told in such an offhand way that they seem to be almost missed. But the story wastes even the potential for glimmers of hope, and even the very last sentance or two leave the reader disappointed that he made it to the end for this? That said, it's a big book, won a GG, and is well-regarded. After being enveloped in pure, unliftable unhappiness each time I read it, it just made me want to have a drink.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Trans Canada West near Headingley, in a Husky truckstop restaurant. Not sure if this really counts in my 52 books, 52 towns, 52 weeks challenge, but it gets me farther to drop off another book, I hope it gets a few more interested readers, and KI've got some catching up to do. Too many library books, which you can't drop as Bookcrossing books!

Deep shit! I loved the narrator's voice and the exploration of adolescence within a fundamentalist religious community. Still piecing together the ending.
